Later this year, we will open our first site in Heidelberg, Germany, an already established rich ecosystem supportive of innovation and infrastructure. To spearhead the opening of our Heidelberg site, we are seeking a Lab Technician to be a vital member of our new team.
ROLE OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Lab Manager, the Lab Technician is responsible for assisting in the routine maintenance of a shared laboratory space while responding to the laboratory-related requests of our resident companies and other staff members as needed. We are looking for a multi-talented individual to support shared equipment and spaces. You should be a highly capable, self-directed individual who employs a high level of autonomy in your work, while being able to work collaboratively within a small team. This position provides an excellent opportunity to support promising startup companies in their most formative years, while developing your own laboratory skills in a cutting-edge biotechnology facility.
RESPONSIBILTIES
- Assist Lab Manager overseeing the general lab environment, including cleanliness of space
- Assist in the maintenance and servicing of laboratory equipment including daily tasks to ensure instruments are working properly, preventative maintenance is attended, and residents’ issues are resolved quickly
- Manage liquid and solid waste pickups and proper storage of chemical and biohazard waste
- Additional duties include keeping spaces clean and well stocked and acting as the primary responder for equipment alarms and laboratory or facility emergencies
- Work in collaboration with BioLabs’ staff on special projects to achieve objectives and enhance organization, cleanliness and safety in the laboratories and overall facility
- Think critically to resolve unique issues specific to a shared work environment and help maintain an environment of collaboration and creativity
- Responsible for enforcing all maintenance protocols in the co-working laboratory
- Support resident scientists with equipment and software training
- Assist in management of alarm systems including restoration resets and checks
- Monitor and maintain the inventory management control program, ordering, shipping/receiving
- Maintain chemical inventories and work with environmental, health and safety (EHS) consultants to manage liquid and solid waste pickup and storage of chemical and biohazard waste
- Ensure that the culture at BioLabs at Heidelberg is welcoming, proactive, inspiring, and inclusive
QUALIFICATIONS
- 2+ years of Scientific/Laboratory-related experience in a laboratory environment
- Exceptional communication skills
- Customer service focused, with excellent work ethic and optimistic attitude
- Highly organized and results driven
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, an effective listener and proactive relationship builder
- Self-motivated, routinely deliver projects successfully with minimal supervision
- Must be able to lift 15 kilograms and be able to stand for multiple hours at a time
- Strong IT skills, intermediate English language skills
- Completed training as a Biological technical assistant
- Ability to travel to other BioLabs locations (domestic and international)
