Job-Beschreibung und Hinweise für Senior Scientist/Scientific Matrix Lead: Functional Characterization (m/f/d)

In Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development organisation (pRED), we make transformative medicines for patients in order to tackle some of the world’s toughest unmet healthcare needs. At pRED, we are united by our mission to transform science into medicines. Together, we create a culture defined by curiosity, responsibility and humility, where our talented people are empowered and inspired to bring forward extraordinary life-changing innovation at speed.

Our vision is to create novel and highly differentiated medicines. To this end, we discover and develop novel therapeutic antibodies, next generation biologics and gene therapy approaches. Our ambition is to deliver such novel molecules to patients with game changing clinical benefits.

We are looking for a Senior Scientist (m/f/d) for the department of Functional Characterization. The department belongs to a unit called Large Molecule Research within Roche Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development (pRED). This position therefore offers the opportunity to interact with numerous functions within Roche to deliver novel medicines to patients.

Job mission

In a matrix-orientated organization, you will work together with different scientists (m/f/d) and experienced lab associates (m/f/d) in a highly dynamic and cross-functional environment. You contribute to the analytical strategy for the molecules in strong interplay with global functions with an end-to-end thinking. You are part of preclinical project teams as a functional representative and as a technical team leader.

Your impact

  • You are responsible for the selection, development and qualification of cellular and non-cellular functional mode of action-reflecting potency assays in alignment with Pharma Technical Development

  • Furthermore, you analyze the structure-function relationship of biomolecules including AAV vectors and their potential side products by functional assays and measurements of protein interaction kinetics

  • Besides, you contribute to the evaluation and implementation of novel technologies for functional characterization of large molecules and gene therapy projects

  • You are the link between Research and Technical Development and can understand the needs and opportunities of each organization

Your profile

Team player: You are passionate about building strong teams in a matrix organization. In your teams, everyone shares the success while setbacks are understood as an opportunity to learn

Change: You thrive on situations involving uncertainty and help others see the opportunity of change

Being courageous: You tackle difficult issues with confidence and you hold things together during tough times

Organizational awareness: You see the big picture and have a clear understanding of other groups’ business needs

Continuous learning: You enjoy the challenges of unfamiliar tasks while continuously learning new things. You seek novel approaches to solve problems and to challenge the status quo.

Presentation skills: You know how to present in a clear and convincing way before big audiences and management boards.

The technical requirements for this position

  • You have a solid background in molecular, immune and cell biology as well as in cell-free and cell-based analytical techniques. Furthermore, you understand the mode of action (MoA) for drug candidate selection and gene therapy modalities.

  • You have significant understanding and experience in the development and qualification of MoA-reflecting potency assays and quality control strategies. This implies that you are eager to develop new functional assays for both large molecule and gene therapy projects (e.g. AAV-based).

  • A university degree and PhD in biochemistry, biology or a similar area is the foundation of your knowledge

  • Project Management and fluent English language skills are natural to you

We look forward to receiving your application!

Your application

For your application, please keep it simple. We only ask you for an updated CV and a short essay (max. 300 words) about “Network/Matrix organizations: opportunities and challenges for the workplace”. A motivation letter is not needed. All further relevant documents such as certificates, reference letters etc. will be handled at a later stage.
